copy, right?
from tim o'reiley, via david ascher

Google's opt out approach is the only way to cut the Gordian knot of forgotten rights and permissions.

Oh, hell yeah. Wouldn't it be great if we had a list of pieces of music, books, short stories and movies that you weren't allowed to copy, because the copyright holder had denied that right. And the rest you would be able to copy freely, because the copyright holder hadn't declared their right?

Discuss.

Doesn't this primarily select large corporate interests with the ability to retain stables of lawyers to protect their copyrights as those who will opt-out, while depriving smaller holders (eg, private citizens)? Were those individual copyright holders going to make a huge stink about you copying their stuff, anyway? And aren't the corporations the ones who are already hot beneath the collar about the violation of their copyright?

ie, status quo?

Hmmm okay. Let's firstly remember that the WTO TRIPS Agreement states that:
"... the TRIPS agreement does not demand that distribution of copyrighted material is a criminal offence unless it is done on a commercial scale. This means it is up to the copyright holder to bring the offender to court.". Or something.

Hmmmmm. Interesting. This discussion brings more light to the saying "it's not illegal until you get caught".

Before I go and download some more linux ISO's from BitTorrent here's a worthy Google search for you:
