Help! My removalist suddenly can't pick up my stuff tomorrow - they gave us less than 24 hours notice that they can't do the job. Does anyone know a removalist that can move me... Tomorrow? I'm desperate here! We're going to be paying more rent, living out of an esky blah blah blah (not amused at all) By the way? Screw Citymove.com |

512 Mb SD ram
Have an oldish computer on which I would like to install Mandriva Linux 2010.0. Currently I have 755.2 MB of ram on it; and with a Pentium III (Coppermine) it is enough to run it - in fact I am typing this using a Madriva 2010.0 live cd. But, it needs just a bit more ram to handle some of the big programs. Anyone know where I can get two more - or at least one - 512 MB SD ram sticks? Called the computer shops - which I'll do again - but hoping someone here might have some or know where I might find some. Thanks |

Buying furniture overseas
Hi Everyone - This is a bit of a strange one. I'm going to Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kuching) and Singapore in January/February on holiday. It's my 21st birthday soon and my father wants me to buy a Glory Box whilst over there and send home to Brisbane. I know this is a long shot but does Malaysia/Singapore even sell these? Is anyone here from Singapore/Mayalsia or knows lots about it? I'm totally at a loss as to what to do. |

Hi Brisneylanders :-) Looking for some good bargains here... does anyone know of any designer clearance sales around town? Or at least where I could find some reasonably-priced flats (under $40) or torn skinny jeans (under $80)? |

Rubber ducky, you're the one...
Hey Brisneylanders, where can I find Bud Rubber Ducks (the small ones, not the massive ones) in the city? I know they used to stock them in a little shop in the Wintergarden, but it's been taken over by somebody else now. The only other place I've seen them is Mod Cons in the Valley, but I'm only doing a quick city trip tomorrow and probably won't get time to go there. Thanks! |

Brisneyland, help me with a potentially embarrassing situation: One of the other girls at my work has invited me to a 'Tickle Your Fancy' party at her house. The description say 'lingerie and confidential sex tips'. For anyone who might have gone to one of these parties previously... ...exactly how bawdy are we talking here? Are there just catalogues of bras and stuff to buy, or is this a situation where my overweight self will be expected to go off and squeeze into some lacy contraption before a discussion on oral sex with penis jokes? I am on a mission...
And I need your help Friends' List!! As some may or may not know, I am a part-time Tupperware Demonstrator and I'm always looking for the next opportunity to get together and meet new people whilst imparting some helpful hints and tips and wonderful ways to use this fabulous product. Have you ever wanted an excuse to catch up with old school friends, neighbours, colleagues or just 'the girls' (or 'boys') but never seem to find the right time or place to get together? Why not hold a Tupperware Demonstration instead? There are fabulous products, simple and effective recipes to try, loads of free Tupperware to qualify for and best of all, you have plenty of fun with your friends. It is coming up to the biggest time of the year and my manager has issued me a special challenge to have 5 parties in my diary over the next 3 weeks including our all important Record Breaker Week. RBW is where each Demonstrator is challenged to sell the most Tupperware they have ever sold during a week and 'break' their record. I would love each and every one of you if you have EVER considered holding a Tupperware party, even if you would just like to see the new specials and make an order, to please look at your busy schedules and see when we could fit in a gathering of you and some friends. Tuesday 3rd November 2009 I've often wondered about why going from a 25℃ day to a 35℃ day is a kind of
death, but 35℃ to 45℃ (well, more usually 41℃ or so, I've only ever experienced
one day above 45℃, even if it does count for extra spending that morning in
direct sunlight clad in a 5mm scuba wetsuit that I bought for use in winter) is
a difference in kind only. I gather most of our extremely unseasonable days
come in from the desert though, so I suppose the difference is humidity.
Mid-summer in Sydney can turn on 38℃ and humid in season, but the desert will
send 38℃ and dry out of it.
Today was a desert day, forecast 35℃, actual temperatures closer to 39℃, but
dry and windy. It was not unsurvivable, and I say this from the perspective of
third trimester, usually proclaimed as a lifetime peak of heat intolerance. But
I am yet to be tested against humidity and heat together.
I'm going to watch the forecasts though, and carry a water bottle around for
hot days, because a train got stuck on the Harbour Bridge for 40 minutes today
and 40 minutes in unairconditioned railway carriages full of angry people will
make me pretty ill now, but without water I'd be in big trouble.
The other great thing about desert days is that they're always broken with
southerlies. Well, great for me because I can sit around and enjoy the small
adrenaline rush that comes with having the weather try and break into my house.
Less great for anyone fighting the fires that start on desert days, although it
doesn't seem that today was too bad in that respect.
We beached on Sunday. My upbringing has misled me: my family were never at
the beach between 11am and 3:30pm. You wake up with the beach. You say good
afternoon with the beach. You don't stay there for the peak of the UV index. So
I'm always mildly surprised to be sitting in the sun with cheerful pale skinned
people at noon. As best I can tell the surf is always pretty substantial at
Bronte, and I don't trust myself with my new planetary shape in the surf, so I
stuck to the giant rock pools and the ocean bath. Being in the water was
astoundingly pleasant; being out of it must be getting more uncomfortable than
I had realised.
Andrew said that the surf was good quality, but it was typical Sydney: the
flags for safe swimming were all of about five metres apart, and there was a
rip down the middle of the beach twice as wide as that (Pete was annoyed, the
bits without waves always look more appealing). There must have been a decent
current too, someone got swept right down the beach to the south. Turns out if
you shout loudly enough, essentially all of Bronte will hear you. (A lifesaver
went out efficiently on a big blue longboard well before he was at serious risk
of being tossed onto the rocks.)
It feels like I should slow my life down, and generally this year
has not been as hectic as last, one upside of many of my friends moving away I
suppose. But for example this weekend, on top of the beach on Sunday we had an
infant care class on Saturday (lots of videos of babies grizzling) and then
went to Jamie and Lisa's Halloween/birthday party. We decided to rent a car for
the Saturday extravaganza. I can see why people with small cars drive
everywhere; if you regard the purchase and upkeep of the car as a sunk cost,
the fuel makes it considerably cheaper than public transport. We spent $5.77 on
fuel for the day. The downside was parking in Pyrmont. Most of the parking is 1
or 2 hours, 24 hours a day, due to the nearby casino. We eventually wedged our
teeny rental Getz in half a car spot.
I was pretty lazy about my costume this year. Partly it's just hard to top
Andrew's effort in cutting off more than a foot of hair for a party in 2006.
But I'm also trying to limit the number of outfits I buy that are designed to
fit me and my 40cm passenger. If I could have found a cheap way to go as Saturn
I would have. (For bonus points, Janus is a moon of Saturn.) Anyway, now Janus
has some pirate gear for his dress-up box.

Two questions
Our workplace is looking for a new caterer, as our previous one is getting a bit slack-o. The building is on Adelaide street in the city. The company must be able to deliver, and a variety of hot and cold foods, as well as muffin and fruit platters, would be ideal. Does anyone know of any particularly good, reliable businesses? Also, I need to send a hamper to a guy who doesn't like beer, wine, or spicy foods - and all the 'man' hampers I could google up had at least one of these in it! He prefers bourbon and cider, and again it's got to be somewhere that can deliver to the CBD. Thanks guys! |

Business card printing in Brisbane
Hi Brisneylanders! I am graduating next week (scary huh?) and for our grad show I would like to have some business cards printed out to give to prospective employers. Can anyone suggest some good quality cheapish printing places in the city/valley/southside that would hopefully have a quickish turnaround? <3 Also, I would just like to say a huge big thanks to everyone who helped me with my previous question about travel agents. We found an awesome deal for Europe ($1300!) and booked our tickets today and all your advice was outstanding! :D I'll be going through and thanking everyone individually later too haha. Recommendations: State Schools for ASD kids?
Hey guys - this is going to be a bit of a long shot, but I have to try. I have to return to Brisbane for work at the end of the year - after 3 years up on the Sunshine Coast. I have a 9 year old daughter with Aspergers Syndrome (not high-functioning), and naturally I'm mostly concerned about the right school for her. I don't care where I move, and how much rent I have to pay - as long as she will be supported in the right school. She has teacher-aide funding that will follow her - however there are higher levels of support than others - and I'm after recommendations for the best. She's at a brilliant school right now - which is tolerant and supportive and she has absolutely blossomed (in comparison to her last school where she was the victim of bullying, daily harrassment and even death threats) (I'm ashamed to say - I teach at this school - different campus) . This is why I'm so passionate about finding her a school similar to the one that she's so happy in now. Does anyone here have any experience with special needs in the State System? Or better still - does anyone have an ASD child in a particularly fantastic state school in Brisbane? I'll even be happy with schools to avoid. There's just so many schools in Bris - I don't know where to start! I've contacted the Autisim Association of QLD (and similar groups) - but I thought I'd go to the place that has its finger on the pulse! Any insight would be really appreciated! Thanks! Moonlight Walk
If you catch sight of some odd sorts promenading beside the river this Friday evening, it will be the annual Moonlight Walk to raise funds for people living with multiple sclerosis. http://moonwalk.com.au/While there's some champion efforts going on, I've noticed not one of the five top fund-raising individuals has reached their goal yet, and only one of the top teams has - yay, St John's Ambulance. The Wonders might be winning but they've a way to go to reach their goal. The steampunk group R.O.S.E.A, currently at number five (and a favorite for best-dressed team with all the corsetry and pantaloons) are tantalisingly close; they need only $7.25 more! You could help! The walkers are expected back in the Southbank Parklands - where there will be live entertainment, food and drink - by 7.45, when the official presentations and prize draws happen. Its actually possible to register on the day between 4pm, and 5.15pm when it officially starts, in the Cultural Forecourt, should you suddenly have a whim for a 10km walk in fine company. |

Brisneyland meet-up 09 version 2.0 - the booking
I promise I'll stop talking about this sometime soon. Probably after the event, I would imagine. ;] As discussed here, the Brisneyland meet-up 09 version 2.0 will be held at Little Singapore, 42 Charlotte Street in the city on Saturday the 14th of November. It's very close to Turbot St car-park for cheap cheap car-parking, and should be accessible via public transport. More importantly their menu is fantastically cheap [nothing over $15]. I have booked in for 1pm for 10 people - one more than the RSVP list, just in case. I'll post a reminder closer to the event. Those with social anxiety please make an effort to come along to this if only for a short amount of time. The people I've met from this group are some of the best, most down-to-Earth people I've had the fortune of associating with. And they don't bite at all. Current Mood: crazy |
